Appleton is a beautiful, friendly community situated in Central Newfoundland, on the banks of the Mighty Gander River and is located approximately 20KM west of Gander.

An Introduction to Appleton

Appleton is located twenty kilometers west of Gander on the Mighty Gander River. Appleton has everything for the outdoor enthusiast. Walking and snowmobile trails can be found throughout the Town and the surrounding area. The Appleton Marina is the perfect spot for all boaters to access the Gander River and Lake. In February the Annual Appleton Winterfest is held and is an event that many people from all over central Newfoundland come to attend.

In the late 1800's the site of Appleton was first settled when a lumber company established operations. Manager of the sawmill, Mr. Appleton Cleaves loved this side of the river so much he decided to settle here. The community of Appleton was then named after him.

By 1914, the sawmill operations in Appleton were abandoned and it was another fifteen to twenty years before Appleton became active again.

In 1956, there were 156 people living in Appleton. In 1981 the majority of the community worked in Glenwood for Bowater's Newfoundland Limited. Others commuted to jobs in Gander or surrounding areas.

According to the 2006 census, there are currently 582 residents in what is now the Town of Appleton.
